First, some timelines:  Walmart construction is scheduled to begin in October 2014, with the store expected to open on February or March of 2016.  LA Fitness (old Winn Dixie building) has been granted their land disturbance permit and is in the process of applying for their building permit. Demolition of that building should begin soon.

Dunkin' Donuts Scott. Blvd. proposal withdrawn

From the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association: "The Dunkin' Donuts’ (DD) special land use permit (SLUP) proposed for 1450 Scott Blvd (old Avon Bldg. site) was withdrawn* at the Board of Commissioners’ session on July 22.  Many were looking forward to a Dunkin' Donuts but others warned that DD’s concessions, although substantial, did not address key impacts such as additional pollution from idling cars and traffic congestion...." [Read more.]

Dunkin Donuts public meeting

Event Date and Time:
07/10/2014 - 7:00pm

From Dunkin Donuts re: their proposal for a drive-through DD on Scott Bl about halfway from North Decatur Rd south toward Ace Hardware: I am writing to invite you and other residents of Medlock Area Neighborhood Association to a meeting at Scott Boulevard Baptist Church on Thursday, July 10, at 7 PM.  .... As you know, Dunkin corporate had initiated this SLUP application with the idea of developing their prototype on the site.  Dunkin came to recognize that this site required maximum creativity and flexibility in order to develop the kind of coffee shop that could become a true neighborhood meeting place, so they turned it over to their best local franchisee, James Laskaris.   James owns the Toco Hills store so he knows the success of his store depends on meeting the needs of the neighbors like you, who are also his best customers.  He has a win/win mentality and has asked that any MANA members who might be available to come out and meet with him on Thursday, so he can listen to your concerns.

New apartment development on Church St.

Location is near DeKalb Medical and within the Medline LCI Plan area.  See attached site plan.  From the developer: June 10, 2014. Atlantic Realty Partners is pleased to announce that on May 27, 2014, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved its applications for the development of a 330-unit apartment complex to be located on 9.4 acres on the corner of Church Street and Milscott Drive in Decatur. The site was previously occupied by a car dealership but has been vacant for years. The multifamily complex, to be named “The Reserve”, will feature two “U-shaped” buildings enclosing a terrace courtyard with landscaping and a swimming pool. (See attached site plan). To maintain an urban feel, the buildings are situated directly adjacent to the street and will largely shield the parking lot from view. Additionally, the developer will install sidewalks and landscaping along both Church Street and Milscott Drive.

Suburban Plaza redevelopment resumes

From Selig Enterprises: "Selig Enterprises, Inc. is pleased to announce that after an almost two year legal delay over the redevelopment of Suburban Plaza, all litigation between Good Growth Dekalb (GGD) and Dekalb County has been resolved and the redevelopment can resume.  During lengthy discussions with GGD, Selig was able to address most of GGD’s concerns in a manner that will only improve our planned redevelopment of Suburban Plaza, including agreeing to the installation of additional sidewalks along Medlock Road, as well other improvements such as landscaping and fence repair next to the neighborhood of homes located directly to the rear of the shopping center.
