Crime wave hits Druid Hills area

Be especially vigilant against criminal activity in the neighborhood. According to sources in the Druid Hills Civic Association, a crime wave seems to be under way in the Druid Hills area with criminals breaking into homes, even when occupied. Houses have been broken into from Fairview and Lullwater to North Decatur Road between Durand Drive and Princeton Way as late as last night. More details to follow.

New bridge from VA to Lullwater

Bridging the Gap from Emory to VA Going from Emory to the VA Medical Center? Try walking instead of driving -- that is, walking on the new suspension bridge that connects both campuses. The bridge crosses Peachtree Creek in Lullwater Preserve and provides much needed pedestrian access between Emory and the VA Medical Center. Spanning 210 feet and costing $177,000, the bridge was constructed to be minimally disruptive of the natural environs and touches ground in only two places on either side of the creek.

Emory Starts Local Farmers Market on Campus

More people are making the commitment to buy from local farmers. Emory's Office of Sustainability Initiatives is making it easier to buy fresh, local produce, meat and other artisan food products beginning Tuesday, June 10. A farmers market will be held every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the Cox Hall Bridge on Emory's campus. Open to everyone, the weekly farmers market will provide the opportunity to conveniently buy local, sustainable, organic and healthy foods.

Clean Water Campaign 2008 Essay Contest

This essay contest is to promote water conservation and protection of water quality. It is for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students within 16 counties of the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District which includes DeKalb County. One winner from each county will be selected as a finalist and receive $25. The overall district winner will be selected from these finalist and will receive $100. MANA Community Meeting North Decatur Presbyterian Church Monday, June 23, 7pm Mark and save this date to join us at the second of three community meetings in 2008 which will be held at the North Decatur Presbyterian Church at the corner of Medlock and N. Decatur Beach Party

Decatur Beach Party Friday, June 20, 2008 5 p.m. to Midnight Polish up your best flip-flops and get ready to enjoy 60 tons of sand on East Ponce. Dance in the streets to the beach music from the live band performing on the stage that stretches across Ponce de Leon Avenue across from the Square. Activities include children's boardwalk games, a special beach movie on the giant inflatable screen, face painting, wading pools in the sand and more. Adults $6.50 (in advance); Children 12 and under, free (limit two children per paying adult). No coolers, glass or pets allowed.

Saturday, July 12, 9 am - 1 pm Tickets $3 - @ Ace Hardware starting June 16 and Medlock Elementary (front porch) on July 12. Proceeds benefit environmental education at Medlock Elementary. Ace Hardware will donate a rain barrel to the Medlock Elementary's Children's Garden in connection with the Medlock Garden Tour.
