Dear DeKalb Citizen: Each year Keep DeKalb Beautiful (KDB) participates in Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Clean up initiative as a way of giving our communities a “Fresh Start.” With these difficult economic times, volunteers make the difference in sustaining beautiful, healthy, thriving communities. This April, we ask volunteers to help beautify DeKalb County by cleaning up dirty streets, waterways, and illegal dump sites; as well as by greening up parks, schoolyards, MARTA bus stops and other public spaces. On Saturday, April 18th, 2009, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., groups are asked to host community clean ups and beautification projects around the county. [CHCA and MANA plan to participate; details coming later.]
If weather is inclement, participants may reschedule their events at their discretion. KDB will provide supplies such as garbage bags, brown reuse bags, plastic gloves, pickup sticks, safety vests, and t-shirts, as supplies are available. Pick-up sticks and safety vests will need to be returned. This year KDB is also offering supplies to complete storm drain curb-marking projects. Last year, we successfully removed 41,020 pounds of litter from 130 miles of DeKalb County roadways, with the help of over 70 community groups! We look forward to working with you on this annual day of Spring Cleaning. And don’t forget to submit your before and after photos for a special recognition at our Volunteer Appreciation Event this summer.
