DeKalb County Pays Tribute in Remembrance of 9/11
Friday, September 11th
8:46 a.m.
1950 West Exchange Place, Tucker, GA 30084

DeKalb Interim CEO Lee May, the DeKalb Board of Commissioners, Public Safety first responders, and the community at large will pause for a moment of silence to honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks  The remembrance ceremony will take place in front of DeKalb’s 9/11 Memorial.  The ceremony will include the laying of a wreath in front of the memorial sculpture, the playing of Taps and the sounding of emergency alert tones as flags are lowered to half-staff.
“The first responders during the 9/11 attacks were true American heroes who gave their lives in their calling to serve and protect.  It is imperative we always remember the significance of their acts of courage and sacrifice,” said Interim CEO Lee May
“Although the remembrance ceremony generates unsettling memories, it is an opportunity for the DeKalb County community to collectively pause, to reflect on the heroic efforts, sacrifice and loss of public safety personnel and civil citizens during the tragic events of 9/11,” said Dr. Cedric L. Alexander, Deputy Chief Operating Officer of Public Safety.
“The sounding of tones will be done in remembrance to those public safety officials, especially the 343 firefighters from FDNY who made the ultimate sacrifice for the courageous service they provide and for the dangerous work that they do,” said DeKalb Fire Rescue Chief Darnell Fullum.
In 2011, DeKalb County Firefighters and Police officers spearheaded the community effort to construct the memorial that features a steel beam from one of the World Trade Center Towers as the centerpiece.
It is strongly recommended that anyone who wishes to participate arrive no later than 8:25 a.m., as access to the memorial will be restricted during the ceremony.
