Upcoming Decatur Volunteer Opportunities

Decatur Community & Nonprofit News - End of Summer 2015:

Welcome to the end of Summer issue of the Decatur community and nonprofit volunteer e-newsletter. Fall officially begins September 23 but our Summer festivals will soon be coming to a close. You will soon have the opportunity to attend your favorite Fall activities. Will you be in town over Labor Day weekend? If you are, make sure to attend the AJC Decatur Book Festival. Have an even better time at the festival by volunteering (and get a great t-shirt)!

As we head into Fall, there are also opportunities to volunteer in the community. Read below about one of the wonderful volunteer opportunities that I personally spend my time doing – deliver Meals on Wheels to senior citizens for Senior Connections. Don’t think you have time to commit to weekly volunteering? You can always volunteer as a substitute to fill in when other volunteers go on vacation or have other commitments. Or find a friend to “job share” with you and take turns delivering. That’s what I do when there are times that I know I won’t be able to deliver. Another one of my favorite organizations to volunteer with is Friends of Decatur Cemetery (I love putting out the flags at veterans’ graves before Veterans Day and then picking them up afterwards.) If you’re a social media and website guru and have a little extra time, the Friends could use your help – and you would be helping this wonderful place that’s filled with Decatur history, as well as being our largest greenspace.

Fall in Decatur is also known for the many opportunities to listen to music at free events. Next Wednesdaybrings the beginning of the September Blue Sky concerts on Wednesdays at noon and the Saturday evening Concerts on the Square at 7pm. Also, be sure to head to Oakhurst on Thursday evenings in September for Jazz Nights. Want to participate in something more active? Register for Team Decatur and the KP Corporate 5K Run/Walk on September 24. Shirts are being ordered at the end of this week, so register today and don't miss out.

This issue contains information on volunteering at AJC Decatur Book Festival, volunteering to deliver Meals on Wheels, and volunteering to help Friends of Decatur Cemetery with social media and their website. You will also find out about the Blue Sky Concerts, Concerts on the Square and Jazz Nights. If that isn’t enough, find out how to participate in Team Decatur and the KP Corporate 5K. There’s always something for everyone in Decatur!

Friends of Decatur Cemetery:

Media Guru Volunteer Wanted

Help tell the story of events and volunteer opportunities at Decatur Cemetery. The Friends of Decatur Cemetery (FODC), founded in 1993, is a dedicated volunteer group that works closely with the City of Decatur and its citizens to preserve, maintain and improve the cemetery and educate the community about its importance as a historic and cultural resource.

Today FODC continues to advocate for the preservation and improvement of the 58 acres of green space that make up the Decatur Cemetery, the oldest municipal burying ground in the area. The group continues to explore better utilization of the space as a treasured environment within an urban setting. With the implementation of a recent master plan, there is high anticipation that our cemetery will become an even greater treasure.

FODAC is looking for a volunteer to help with the website and social media. Ongoing FODAC projects include Second Sunday Strolls, volunteer workdays, photo contest, Veterans Day, gravestone conservation, and Shared Memories, Enduring Legends (recording stories of the lives remembered).

There is currently information about FODAC on the City of Decatur website. FODC members are eager to welcome new members who share a passion for the preservation of such a beautiful, peaceful place. Those interested in joining or volunteering may contact FODC at friendsofdecaturcemetery@gmail.com
