From Valerie Boss: A brief re-cap of Park Pride’s Friends of Ira B Melton Park Meeting on Oct 1: Because Ira B. Melton is a DeKalb County park contiguous with the much larger Mason Mill Park, a proposal to connect the two with a stream crossing was included in the county's master plan for Mason Mill. The county’s preliminary concept for the park is a wooded wetland, with an unpaved loop trail, part dirt and part crushed stone, around the perimeter. The trail will connect to Mason Mill Park via a stream crossing at the Old Decatur Water Works. Our Park Pride group has decided to host another, better publicized, meeting in late Oct or early Nov to inform the community about what’s happening in the park, and to discuss possible options for the South Peachtree Creek stream crossing. As for our 2013 workdays, we will continue to move the loop trail off the edge of the creek bed, remove trash and invasive plants, and work on the park entrance. A new goal for 2013 is to obtain funding for trees and understory plants, and to install them where the privet has been removed. We also discussed holding nature walks as a way of increasing positive community involvement in the park.
