Fall 2012

Voters Turn Down Transportation Tax

Metro Atlanta voters defeated a one-cent sales tax on July 31 that would have supported $7.2 billion in road and transit improvements over the next 10 years, including a plan to bring light rail service to the Clifton Corridor.

With 100 percent of 1,077 precincts reporting, election results showed voters rejecting the Regional Transportation Referendum (also called T-SPLOST) by a margin of 63 percent to 37 percent, according to the Georgia Secretary of State's Office.

The proposed tax plan would have represented the largest single investment in transportation infrastructure in the region's history.

Park Flourishes in Emory Village

Work on the roundabout in Emory Village was finished last year. Now, a new piazza park -- approximately 8,000 square feet -- is being added to complement the circle, at the corner of Oxford and North Decatur roads.

The program takes items that students, in particular, won't take with them when they move out of the residence halls and other living quarters at the end of the academic year. All donations were repurposed and diverted from local landfills.
