Subject: sewer storage at South Fork Creek?

The city of Atlanta is planning to build a sewer storage "tunnel" beside the South Fork of Peachtree Creek, at Briarcliff Road near Johnson Road, between Zonolite and Emory University.  Some are raising a stink about this. We've talked with Atlanta leadership: this project & a similar tunnel at the North Fork and Cheshire Bridge are needed they say for storing stormwater mixed with sewage during rains. They're listening to us about remedies for the problems it could bring the South Fork and the immediate neighborhood.

A public meeting scheduled for next week will be a great place for you to learn more, and help make the outcome better.  Details below from public information manager William Horton.

A sweeter scented piece of news: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency finds contamination in Zonolite Park to be at much lower levels than many neighbors think. The feds are pursuing cleanup money for a small mound of lingering contamination from WR Grace; cleanup could be underway once DeKalb County approves the plans.

Farewell and thanks: DeKalb citizens benefitted from Watershed Department leadership by Dr. Francis Kung'U and Jo Ann Macrina. Both left DeKalb since February; Dr. Kung'U to private work, Ms. Macrina to head Atlanta's Watershed Department, where she'll oversee projects involving the South Fork farther downstream.

Best Wishes to both, and we hope DeKalb  County leaders find highly qualified replacements.

Message from Atlanta City Government: A public informational meeting regarding the Peachtree Creek project will be held on Tuesday, April 12th at 6:30 p.m. at Morningside Presbyterian Church. Team members will discuss the scope and potential impacts of the project and answer questions. Letters will be sent to the community tomorrow with information about the meeting.

Project updates will be provided as we move forward through the following phases of the project:

  • Design
  • Bid & Award
  • Notice to Proceed (NTP)
  • Construction
  • Post Construction

More informational meetings will take place as we get closer to the start of construction (March 2012). If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to working with the community as we move forward with this project.
