From the Clairemont Great Lakes Neighborhood Association: Our Community Farm Project is located at 121 Sams Street in Decatur, GA. We are a start-up, urban farm led by experienced Burundi farmers who've come to metro-Atlanta as refugees and supported by a group of Burundi women, joining together to grow food, exchange farming knowledge, and to develop a greater understanding of farming practice in the ATLanta area. The farm will also provide the families who are often facing food security risks with healthy food for their tables.
Our Goal: Working in partnership with Susan Pavlin and Refugee Family Services, our mission is to provide these women with practical farm experience, workshops and trips to local farmers markets in order to create new opportunities in production, distribution and marketing.
It has been awhile since our last farm update, and we invite you to stop by 121 Sams St at your leisure to take a look around. For those of you who saw the farm early on, you will barely recognize it now! More than 20 families are being well fed, as we've been harvesting around 100 lbs. of summer squash each week, along with several bushels of green beans. Our tomatoes are coming along, and we were able to enjoy the first few ripe ones this past Saturday. It's been incredibly exciting to see the fruits of our labor! To see some pictures, please visit our new blog at

SATURDAY, June 26 -- A Special Volunteer Opportunity: Tour Truly Living Well Natural Urban Farm!
As a part of our growing and marketing workshops, we will be taking our first collective field trip to Truly Living Well Natural Urban Farms. We want everyone to be able to attend so we are reaching out for volunteers to meet at our farm, give rides to the women going to Truly Living Well, and join us for our tour. TLW is an incredible urban farming operation, founded by the talented and worldly Rashid Nuri. This will undoubtedly be a fun and informative experience! Please help us make the most of it. Let us know if you can join us, lend your time and a few seats in your car.
Details:
--Meet at 10am Saturday 6/26 at the farm (121 Sams St, Decatur)
--Return at approximately 2pm and drive groups back to Clarkston
--Light snacks provided
WISH LIST: We have come a long way in developing the infrastructure of the farm, but there are still a few things that we need to improve our operation. We are happy to accept used and new items.
-- FOUR high-quality garden hoses (50-75ft long, 3/4 inch diameter). Example.
-- Compost Thermometer like this one.
-- Hanging Scale for produce tracking, like this one.
-- Shovels, Hoes, and general garden tools. We'll take what we can get!
REGULAR VOLUNTEERING:
If you are interested in helping out with farm work during the week, please let us know your availability. The women put in many hours of hard work each Saturday on top of their busy work schedules, but as we all know,
farming is not a one day/week job. During the week, we need help with harvesting, watering, weeding, and various maintenance tasks. Let us know if you'd like to come out and get your hands dirty!
Happy Summer Solstice,
Susan and Robin
