October 26, 2009. To the Emory Community: This message is being provided to the Emory community as a public service. Two crimes recently were reported as occurring outside of the University’s campus, but the locations were close enough that we wanted to alert you to exercise caution when in those areas, particularly after dark:
• On Sunday, October 25, at approximately 9 p.m., an Emory student reported being robbed at gunpoint in front of her apartment building at Clairmont Reserve Apartments, across from the Clairmont Campus. The woman, whose purse was stolen, was not physically harmed. The assailant escaped in a red, two-door vehicle. A description of the assailant was not available.
• On Friday, October 23, at approximately midnight, a woman reported being robbed at gunpoint on the sidewalk in front of 1450 N. Decatur Rd near the Oakdale Rd. intersection. The woman, whose purse was stolen, was not physically harmed. The two assailants were described as:
• A black male, about 30 years old, 6’4”, 170 lbs., green shirt, light-colored pants;
• A black male, 6’0”, light-colored jeans, white/blue/red plaid shirt, white skull cap with blue stripe.
Both incidents are being handled by the DeKalb Police Department. Anyone having information relevant to these incidents is encouraged to call the DeKalb Police Department at 770-724-7850.
The Emory Police Department offers the following general safety tips:
• After dark, walk with a partner or in a group whenever possible
• Avoid poorly lit areas
• Know where you are and be aware of your surroundings
• Use safety escort service by calling 404-727-PARK
• Do not hesitate to report suspicious activity to police by calling 9-1-1 or 404-727-6111 (EPD emergency), or by using elevator phones or blue light emergency phones located throughout campus
